As someone who enjoys the dynamic between Batman and Gordon, I really liked this story and I found the concept to be pretty great.Īs I’ve mentioned there have been countless Batman Christmas stories and a lot of them have been pretty good. The idea is that every New Year’s the two meet up to have coffee, and reflect on another successful year of crime-fighting. The ending is great and the action is really well done.įinally the issue with a short story that centers on Batman and Gordon. After that, we get to the Joker tale which is probably the straightest forward of the stories but is still solid. This was the only story that wasn’t used in the animated Adaption which is too bad but given the lack of action and melancholy tone I can see why. It starts off one way but ends in another and adds some somberness to the issue. Freeze story is great and really works well with the character that they established in the show.

It’s fine, lighthearted stuff that works well for the holiday theme. The Harley and Ivy story has much of the same tone as they string along an increasingly angry Bruce Wayne who they’ve poisoned and are forcing to buy them stuff. There are a lot of funny moments that come from this but it does get balanced out by action with the arrival of Clayface. The opening story sees Barbara Gordon at a shopping mall when she notices Bullock and Montoya undercover. The first two stories tend to go more toward the comedic and they work very well. The short story format allows the creators to tell different types of stories so we get a variety of action and fun with some emotional beats thrown in as well. Much like the TV all the elements that work there work in this book. Finally, the issue ends with Batman and Gordon’s annual meet up and toasting to another year of survival. Freeze escaping from Arkham and one with the Joker planning mass murder on New Year’s. The opening story sees Batgirl, Bullock, and Montoya taking on Clayface, the second had Harley and Ivy kidnapping Bruce Wayne and forcing him to take them on a shopping spree. The book consists of five stories all set around the holidays.

As far as Batman Christmas stories go there are many great ones to choose from, but this is easily one of the best. The issue would prove to be a big hit as it would win an Eisner Award and also get adapted into an episode of the Animated Series titled “Holiday Knights”. What really made the book cool was that it was done by the writers and artists that had worked on the cartoon show such as Paul Dini and Bruce Timm. Published in December 1994, the oversized issue featured various short stories featuring various characters from the Animated Series set around the Holidays. The Batman Adventures was a great title and one of the best things to come out of it was the Holiday Special one-shot.
